Grandmother Willow: The Ancestral Weaver
Grandmother Willow: The Ancestral Weaver
Earth Spirits Series No. 1
12x24in ink and painting on composted canvas
In this painting, I wanted to capture the mystical essence of a willow, weaver, and spider elder spirit. At the center, an ethereal figure emerged, reminiscent of a willow tree with its delicate fronds cascading and spiraling as if caught in an unseen breeze. The fine, wispy lines began to evoke the gentle sway of willow branches and the intricate weaving of a spider's web—both fragile and powerful.
As I worked with the ghostly white against the deep, dark background, it felt like I was painting a spirit transcending from the shadowy underbrush of an ancient forest. The figure itself seems to swirl upwards in a state of serene motion, embodying both the grace of nature and the mystery of the supernatural.
The hints of green I added are subtle, representing the spirit’s deep connection to the earth and the life-giving force of the willow. The swirling loops at the base of the figure felt like they symbolized the cycles of life, growth, and rebirth, grounding the spirit in the natural world while it remains a guardian and storyteller of the forest.
